This is a question that has been asked by many over decades. However we first need to ask the question of what causes tooth decay. By understanding the causes of tooth decay, it becomes easier to analyze how curable tooth decay is.

We will now look at some causes of tooth decay, and briefly discuss how curable or removable  they are. They include:

  • Improper oral hygiene: apart from causing tooth decay, it can also cause bad breath. You can help to cure tooth decay if you observe good oral hygiene, by brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, and especially after meals.

  • The majority of people will eat heavy chunks of sugary food like candies, cakes and other goodies, oblivious to the risk they pose to their teeth. These will cause tooth decay because the bacteria that thrive in our mouths will use the sugar as food, and in the process producing acids that damage the enamel of the tooth, and act to fuel tooth decay. However, it is curable if we keep off these sugary foods and even better if we brush well after eating them.
  • Tooth decay is curable if we have regular scheduled dental appointments for routine check-upsideally twice a year. Regular check-ups will help in detecting any tooth decay that is at an early stage, as well as  developing an early treatment plan for decay that has already occurred.
  • At an early stage in the development of decay, a dentist may recommend a filling for a partially decayed tooth. This is placed after the removal of the decayed part of the tooth, and it is one of the many options for curing decay at an early stage.
  • When the decay has reached the worst stage and nothing can be done to restore the tooth, a dentist can recommend extraction of the tooth and in place of it put a partial denture, a bridge or a dental implant. This will help to  prevent decay in adjoining teeth
  • Feeding of children using bottles should be regulated. The feeding bottle has been confirmed as one of the causes of tooth decay in children, especially if sugary drinks are used, or if the bottle is used on demand, rather than for regular feeds.
  • It is recommended that you feed on proper food containing vitamin A and D which in turn help to retain plenty of calcium, which can help in building strong teeth.

We can see from the above how tooth decay is not only curable, but it can be prevented (which is always preferable).
