Children have very smooth surfaces on their teeth; hence it very important that they regularly clean their teeth. It is one of the many things that will protect them from tooth decay. It is also advisable that parents and child caregivers let their children know that they don’t have an option or a choice in taking care of their teeth. It must be done.
Children with cavities in their teeth will suffer from aches and pains, and they may not be able to eat properly. Untreated tooth decay in children can cause terrible oral pain, and possible tooth loss.
Among many others, there are various measures that we should undertake to ensure our children are protected from tooth decay.

  • Teaching them the need for proper oral hygiene is important. Additionally tooth decay in children can also be prevented by regularly taking your child to a dentist.
  • Explain and demonstrate to your child proper and healthy eating habits. Do not allow them to consume too many sugary foods like candies, sweets and cakes between meals. If a child must snack between meals let them have something that is friendly to the teeth, with vegetables being a good choice. Foods that have a lot of minerals and calcium are also recommended because they will keep their teeth strong and healthy.
  • Good dental habits in children include having them brush twice a day. Children under six years should be helped to brush, or the brushing should be done under supervision. The toothbrushes should be child-friendly
  • As a parent it is advisable to be a good example to children by maintaining a clean set of teeth that are free from tooth decay. This will create a desire in children to look after their own teeth. Tooth decay is not something that children should have to go through if a parent is really looking after them.
  • Some areas have fluoride in the water in levels that are good for your children’s teeth and help prevent decay. In areas without fluoride, some bottled waters may contain it. You should discuss with family dentist the level of fluoride in the drinking water and whether it would be a good idea to use some supplements.
  • Parents can make brushing a routine activity for the whole family by doing it at the same time. Brushing together is a ritual that children would always enjoy and look forward to.

It is every parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child has healthy teeth and gums.
